Meditating deeply is one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had. Not only enjoyable but it has allowed me to return to my regular life with new found perspective. Deep meditation can be rejuvenating for the mind, body and soul.
Deep meditation requires one to have some prior experience to meditation. There is a wide variety of meditation techniques that can be used for deep meditation. It’s not important which one it is, just as long as its comfortable for you.
Some meditation techniques such as Samatha meditation focus on objects where as Vipassana meditation focus on internal spiritual awareness. There is also Mantra Meditation where you chant a mantra during your meditation.

1. Location! Location! Location!
Our minds are influenced a lot by the environment. If our minds are subject to constant high stress and demanding situations then your actions will also be the same. This conditions will translate into your regular life. For example, waiting in traffic will get you very upset because you want to move faster. Standing in line for something will start bothering you because of the wait.
The environment you need to set for your deep meditation has to be peaceful and quiet. This could be your bedroom or a private area in your home. This is the most important point and cannot be emphasized enough.
While I was in university my room was constantly being bombarded by my brothers or parents for this, that and the other. I could not sit in peace even for 5 minutes. Even during my meditation, my mind would be waiting for someone to barge in. So I started going to the park near my house to sit by the river.
I would let my ears drown in the sounds of the flowing river and let my skin feel the coolness of the wind. Sitting idle near the riverside without any distractions helped me get connected to the earth.
2. Inhale Peace, Exhale Chaos
Deep meditation starts with focus. Focus on breathing. I have talked about the importance of breathing meditation. Breathing is the only act that gives us life. If we do not breath then we die. Simple as that.
During meditation, our inhalation should reach the bottom of our belly. The air should not be taken into the lungs but rather into our belly.
Practice Simple Breathing:
- Placing your hands over the belly button.
- Rest them gently.
- Inhale through your nose.
- Feel your hands rise with your belly.
Your focus and meditation will deepen by placing your hands over the belly because then your focus will be on the sensation of breathing into the belly. It is ok if your thoughts are constantly intruding. Let them flow in your mind and let them go.
